MANGALURU: The VI on Thursday held a man and his girlfriend in the of a 21-year-old four years ago. The quantum of punishment is expected to be awarded on Friday.
Judge D T Puttarangaswamy of the court held Ranga, alias Gavi alias Harish, 26, originally hailing from Tiptur in Tumakuru and his girlfriend , 26, a resident of in , guilty of murdering Avinash Suvarna, a resident of Bola in Karkala, in 2014. He was then 21.
While the job profile of Avinash is not known, Sushma was employed at a call centre and an IT services firm located at Morgan’s Gate here, and Harish was working as a cab driver for the same firm.
Avinash and Sushma were in love in 2014 and they had made their relationship public. Over a duration of time, Sushma developed proximity to Harish. Avinash learnt about Sushma’s affair with Harish and hence around 6.15pm on March 31, 2014, tried visiting her at her office. As he tried to barge into the office premises by bypassing security, the HR manager at Sushma’s firm lodged a police complaint against him. While the police issued Avinash a warning at the police station and let him go, Sushma felt humiliated with the HR manager’s warning and hence tendered her resignation on the same evening.
She later called up Harish and narrated the incident. The two then hatched a plot to murder Avinash. Sushma called up Avinash near the Mukka check-post early next morning, in the garb of resolving their differences.
Believing her, Avinash headed to Mukka. As he reached near Pavanje bridge, Harish, who had already been waiting there for Avinash, rammed his pickup vehicle into his motorcycle and fled away. However, Avinash had identified him. The accident took place around 4.45am on April 1, 2014.
A fish trader, who happened to pass by the bridge, called up the ambulance. As he waited until the ambulance arrived, Avinash gave details abut Harish to the fish trader.
He also gave out sufficient details about the incident to the nurses in the ambulance, while he was being rushed to the hospital.
By 7am, even before police could record his statement, Avinash breathed his last in the hospital. However, the nurses who assisted Avinash in the ambulance, made the details public.
Avinash’s father filed a complaint at the Mulki police station where a murder case, instead of an accident case, was registered.
During the season of the investigation, the police also learnt about Sushma’s role in the murder.
While the court has held Harish guilty under IPC Section 302 (murder), it has found Sushma guilty under IPC Section 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) read with IPC Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention).
The case was investigated by Mulki police inspector Ramachandra. Public prosecutor Judith Crasta represented the victims. A total 28 witnesses were examined and 40 documents marked.
