PUNE: A mob attacked a policeman around 1.45pm on Monday for video recording the quota agitation at Handewadi in Hadapsar.
Police naik Sandeep Jamdade (32) of the Mundhwa police’s local intelligence branch was recording movements of the mob participating in the Maratha Mukti Morcha when some protesters raised objection to filming them. The policeman in civil dress revealed his identity and appealed to them to not to object as he was doing his duty .
“The mob comprising around 35 men attacked and abused him thinking that he was not a policeman,” said inspector Mahendra Jagtap of the Mundhwa police.
Jamdade got six stitches on his head. His condition is stable. Jagtap said, “We were maintaining bandobast at Handewadi and Mantarwadi chowks to ensure the agitators don’t block the road. The agitators riding on bikes stopped on seeing Jamdade video recording their movement. They picked up a dispute with him and attacked him.”Jamdade registered an FIR against 30 to 35 unidentified men for preventing him from performing duty among different charges of the , he further.
Senior inspector Sunil Tambe of the Hadapsar police said, “A police team reached the spot after getting information about the attack. One of the suspects, Sudhir Kamthe (32), from Uruli Kanchan was nabbed on the spot. We have seized 19 motorcycles after the protesters abandoned their vehicles on seeing the policemen and fled. We are in the process identifying the vehicle owners. A CCTV camera has captured images of Kamthe, a farmer, a stone at Jamdade.”
